Okay, we're not too far away from the fight the world has been anticipating when Floyd Mayweather takes on the UFC's Conor McGregor.
As fun as this fight will be to watch, this event will do nothing to advance the sport of boxing.
Mayweather is arguably boxing's biggest star since Mike Tyson and the best record holder the sport has ever boasted. 49 contestants have tried to best this man and 49 times they failed. But what does Floyd or the sport of boxing have to gain from this? Oh, they're gonna make enough money to gamble at the same tables as Derek Carr, sure. Assuming Floyd wins, then what? What do we have now? We have a guy who did his job for a sport that got a temporary boost.
Unless...
Conor McGregor is the current UFC Lightweight champion. His mantra is "precision beats power, timing beats speed" and he proved that when he dispatched Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to capture the undisputed UFC Featherweight championship.
In combat sports, anyone has a puncher's chance; that's what makes the sport so enticing. He's an outstanding fighter, no doubt, but he's not the best. He ran his mouth and asked for a replacement opponent after Raphael dos Anjos had to withdrawal due to an injury. In steps Nate Diaz on a 13 day notice and forces Conor to tap to a rear naked choke. "Punchers chance."
However, McGregor has everything to gain here. The UFC and MMA has everything to gain here. Conor's popularity will reach astronomical levels and the UFC will reap the benefits.
Although McGregor has been involved in boxing since he's been 13, so have 49 other guys pitted against Mayweather...and we know how that turned out.
I see Mayweather winning without ever breaking a sweat. I see Mayweather paying good money for a cut man and cornermen that he'll never need. I also see this doing nothing for boxing when everyone will mention Conor McGregor and UFC the next day.
I've got Floyd Mayweather by decisive fashion.
Unless...
