Lion’s Den Scottsdale Fighter Joe “Diesel” Riggs Perseveres at Strikeforce

 Event Despite a Broken Hand

Scottsdale, AZ. – November 25, 2008 –Lion’s Den fighter Joe “Diesel” Riggs (29-10) defeated Luke Stewart at the Strikeforce: Destruction event, despite a broken hand. The injury occurred just seconds into the first round. The 26 year old heavy hitter worked through the pain and added another impressive victory to his MMA record.

“I broke my hand like the first 10 seconds of the fight,” Riggs stated during a TAGG Radio interview.

According to fellow Lion’s Den fighter and one of Joe’s corner men Rick Roufus, “Riggs broke his left hand almost immediately after the bout began, when he threw a counter left. He broke his hand on Stewart’s forehead. Joe showed that he is a warrior and has the heart of a champion. He was in a lot of pain and even with a broken hand Joe was able to persevere. I guess you could say, he won this fight single handedly [laughing].”

Riggs now trains out of the Lion’s Den Scottsdale camp in Arizona. Rick Roufus and Mike Van Arsdale trained with Riggs to help him prepare for his bout with Stewart. Riggs game was dead on and his training paid off. The proof is in the outcome.

Riggs was struggling during the first round, in pain and only able to use one hand effectively, but he came out in the second round determined to win. After a series of punches, referee “Big John” McCarthy was forced to make his first stoppage in nearly a year.

After the fight Riggs discovered that it wasn’t merely a broken hand. The injury was severe enough to require surgery. According to Riggs, they successfully placed six screws in his left hand. Riggs was also happy to report that despite his injury, he will be able to get back in the cage as early as February.
